The district Administrative Offices are located in the lower level of the high school at 275 East Central Avenue. Office hours are from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, year-round including the summer months. Closed on major holidays. (To Top)

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parents are free to contact their child's teacher or counselor to arrange a conference to discuss any aspect of his/her progress. Conferences may be held with an individual teacher or groups of teachers, when appropriate. Additionally, parents may be invited to a conference to review a specific issue or concern regarding their child's academic or social development. (To Top)

School Lunch
A full lunch program is provided in all schools. The monthly menu lists each day's selections. Lunch menus are included in this website under each school site. Hot lunch is $1.75 at the elementary schools and $2.00 at Pearl River Middle School and Pearl River High School. An a la carte menu is also available. Some students pay reduced prices and others receive free school meals. To be eligible for free or reduced price meals, an approved application for the current year must be on file. Application forms are available in each school office. (To Top)

Physical Examinations
Each student entering school for the first time is required to submit proof of physical examination and of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, diptheria-pertusis, tetanus, poliomyolitis, Hepatitis B, and varicella. Proof of a TB test within the past year is required. This documentation is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Students in grades kindergarten, two, four, seven, and ten must have a physical examination. This exam may be performed by either the school physician or, preferably, by the child's personal doctor. Additionally, all students who participate in school interscholastic athletics are required to have a physical examination prior to participation. This exam may be performed by either your family physician or the school physician, as indicated by the parent/guardian on the athletic permission slip.(To Top)

Administering of Medicine
All medication may be administered to students in school only through a doctor's note and parent's written request. Dosage and frequency of its administration, as well as diagnosis of the illness, must be indicated in the note. Medication must be in the original prescription bottle or packaging and must be given directly to the school nurse by the parents. Students may not carry any medication into school at any time.
In order to keep our schools and students healthy, children who have been sick cannot attend school until they are no longer contagious: either 24 hours without a fever or 24 hours after they have been on an antibiotic for an infection. (To Top)

BOCES
The district contracts with the Rockland County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) for special education placement for students with special needs, occupational training courses for high school students in more than twenty trade areas, high speed duplicating services for all buildings and staff computer training. (To Top)

Kindergarten Screening
Each spring, the district conducts a screening for all children eligible for kindergarten that fall. Children must be five years of age on or before December 1st of the year in which they plan to attend kindergarten. This screening determines general developmental levels and identifies children who need further evaluation or may benefit from special programs. A team composed of a kindergarten teacher, special education teacher, reading teacher, speech/language teacher, and nurse screen each child for general knowledge, language, physical and motor development. Screening for students entering in September 2008 will be conducted during the weeks of March 31st to April 17th. Check with each individual elementary school for the exact schedule.

Busing and Student Conduct
Bus transportation is district-funded for students in grades K-4 who live .5 miles, grades 5-7 who live .8 miles, and grades 8-12 who live 1.5 miles from school. The driver is responsible for the safe delivery of students to school and home and for maintaining discipline on the bus. Full cooperation of each rider is required for the safety of all. Each rider is expected to behave courteously, to follow the instructions of the driver promptly, and to practice bus safety at all times. (To Top)

School Closings
Five snow days have been built into in the 2007-2008 calendar - May 22nd, May 23rd, March 28th, March 27th, and March 26th. In the event that school is closed for inclement weather, school will be in session on these days in this sequential order.
All of these days are potential school days; therefore, activities that would preclude your child’s attendance should not be scheduled before it has been determined that school will be closed.
In the event of a school closing, an emergency, or a delayed opening, information can be accessed the following ways:
- Call any of the district’s main telephone lines. A message will be recorded on the district voice mail system.

Special Education

Instructional Support Teams in each school and the Committees on Special Education and Preschool Special Education meet to determine eligibility for school programs. Their evaluations lead to recommendations for support for students and preschoolers with special learning needs. The district provides support programs in each building and special classes to address student needs. School psychologists, and speech, occupational, and physical therapists provide services. Placements are also available for very special needs, including other public programs, BOCES, and day or residential programs in private facilities. (To Top)

Guidance and Career Services
Guidance services are provided for all students in grades K-12 through the Instructional Support Team at the elementary schools, two guidance counselors at the middle school, and four guidance counselors at the high school. The goals of the guidance department include: helping students understand and cope with crises; stimulating the desire for intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth; fostering a positive self-image; helping develop career skills; and monitoring the students' progress toward achieving these goals. The guidance staff encourages parental and staff involvement through written and oral communications.
Psychologists at all levels provide evaluations and personal/educational counseling. Speech therapists provide training for articulation and language development.

Enrichment
A differentiated educational program responds to the varying needs of advanced learners by challenging their intellectual talents. Enrichment, alternative, accelerated, and individually prescribed activities are provided within the regular classroom studies in grades 1 through 7 and then supported additionally for identified students through the PREP program at the elementary level and the Challenge program in the middle school.  At the high school, enrichment is offered through honors, college level, and Advanced Placement courses, as well as the Gamma Tau Pi club. Title I
The Title I Program in reading, writing, and math provides skill, comprehension, and concept development for students who demonstrate needs in these areas. Placement in this program is based on teacher recommendation, evaluation of classroom performance, and analysis of standardized test results. (To Top)

JET Time
JET - Justified Educational Time - is a period of time set aside in each elementary school day for students in grades one through four to receive a variety of enrichment and/or support services without disruption to their classroom instruction. During JET, students may receive instruction in instrumental music, speech, Title 1 remediation, resource room, enrichment program, occupational therapy and physical therapy for anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. During this pre-set time, no new instruction takes place in the classroom. Instead, classroom activities may include centers or provide reinforcement for groups or individuals. Students also use this time for research, writing, and technology. (To Top)

Testing
In Pearl River, our goal is to find the correct balance of tools that will most accurately measure student achievement, as well as provide the district with an assessment of the educational program being offered. As a result, our testing program is continuously refined. In addition, the NYS Education Department has put in place new standards whereby all students must take and pass five Regents level exams in order to receive a high school diploma. Commensurate with the revised Regents exam standards are new state exams in grades three through eight.
For additional information about testing, contact your child's school principal or the curriculum office at 620-3913. (To Top)

Project Graduation
The PRHS Celebrations Committee coordinates an all-night, alcohol and drug free party on graduation night for members of the senior class. An entire year's worth of planning and collaboration with local organizations and businesses culminates in an evening full of fun and fond memories. Activities include volleyball and basketball, dancing and a disc jockey, video games, a caricature artist, live comedy, yearbook and memory wall signings, and plenty of food, snacks, and breakfast. The Celebrations Committee, comprised of parents, faculty, students, and club advisors, solicits donations and volunteers to support the free event. Project Graduation Committee meetings are listed on the district calendar. All are invited to support. (To Top)
